Tom Henry was born in 1961 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1979 to 1983 under Sir Robin Philipson and then went on to teach Art before taking up painting full-time in 2004. Today, Tom works from his studio in Symington, South Lanarkshire.

Tom works primarily in oils. Most of his work is figurative and tends to fall into two categories: ‘‘the invented’’ which looks at life’s struggles usually with a little self-indulgent humour and ‘‘from life’’ which, in the main, has manifest itself in portraiture. ‘‘I love painting and the effects that you can achieve with just a few colours. I feel that my art will always be more about the journey than the destination.’’

Tom’s work is strongly narrative-based. For Broughton Gallery’s Winter 2007 Exhibition, Tom’s work will take inspiration from ‘‘sayings’’: his grandmother’s words of warning, his father’s musings, words from days gone by which enter his consciousness today for no apparent reason. Tom interprets these ‘‘sayings’’ in humorous, sometimes darkly humorous ways.

Tom’s work is held in, among other collections, those of the Royal Bank of Scotland amd Systechnica Ltd.
