Sonas Maclean is a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art where she studied Drawing and Painting. She was born and brought up on the coast of Caithness in the far North of Scotland where her early inspirations came from the sea, the coast, and harbours.

Sonas now lives in Fife. She works in gouache but is also an enthusiastic print maker using both screen printing and etching techniques. She is a past Chair of the Fife Printmakers’ Workshop.

‘‘I would like my images to communicate a sense of hope, strength and an intangible sense of place. My images are my hiding places, to where I can escape to a sense of freedom and peace. They are an open secret between me and anyone with an intimate knowledge of the location.’’

Sonas has twice won both the Elizabeth Greenshields Award and the Ian Massie Memorial Quaich. She has work in Public Collections and, in 2004, one of her paintings was given as a gift by Dunfermline Council to the Dalai Lama.
