Michael Ewart was born in Felton, Northumberland in 1940. He began to paint seriously in his late teens before entering the teaching profession. Having retired from teaching, Michael now devotes his time to painting and has been exhibiting his work since 1980 throughout the UK and occasionally in Spain. He has had no formal art training but, having studied past masters, especially 20th century English painters, he has been able to develop his own distinctive style which is reminiscent of post-impressionist painting. Michael works exclusively in oils to paint his ‘‘everyday scenes’’. With a limited palette of subtle colours and tones he conveys the feeling and mood of a town, its streets and people. He travels a great deal for inspiration, both in the UK and abroad, always looking for new subjects: a beautiful sunset, a busy harbour or simply someone passing on the street. His paintings, though achieved in an economical manner, seem to offer a glimpse into the lives of others as they go about their daily lives as if unobserved. Michael works from his studio at home in Ashington in Northumberland. |
