Madeleine Hand was born in Motherwell in 1959. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1981 where she specialized in Illustration. Today, Madeleine lives in Dunkeld where she divides her time between painting and teaching Art at The New School, Butterstone. She helped to establish Zigzag, a retail outlet in Dunkeld for handmade crafts.

Madeleine’s recent series of watercolour paintings have strong illustrative elements and depict ‘‘everyday’’ scenes. Her subjects are quietly intriguing. They seem to have stories to tell stories which are hinted at but are only just concealed beneath the thin layers of translucent colour from which Madeleine forms her work.

Madeleine’s work combines strong design with decorative splashes of textiles and patterns in nature.
