Ian Boyter was born in St Andrews and, after studying Graphic Design at Edinburgh College of Art, became Chief Designer and Head of the Design Department of the National Trust for Scotland, where he was responsible for print and exhibition design.

During this period he painted in oils, watercolours and acrylics, exhibiting in solo and small group exhibitions.

Ian paints the landscapes, seascapes and townscapes of his birthplace, the East Neuk of Fife and his other main area of inspiration, the coastal fringe of the West Highlands of Scotland which he visits frequently for escape and inspiration.

Today, Ian is a full-time freelance painter and designer in Edinburgh. His pictures are held in many private collections and that of The National Trust for Scotland.
