‘‘I love Art because, having drawn and painted since childhood, it is as close to me as breathing.’’ David Greenwood is drawn to the Palaeolithic cave painters, medieval stained glass workers, the European great masters as well as modern ones such as Georges Roualt, Giacometti and the Germans Macke and Marc. ‘‘Closer to home, I love the painterly romanticism of John Piper and the earthy expressiveness of Joan Eardly and the best of British, the vastly underestimated and much maligned David Bomberg.’’ ‘‘Colour for me, like architecture to Ruskin, is frozen music. I am inspired by light and it’s shadow, colour, and what Bomberg describes as ‘‘the spirit in the mass’’. I take this to mean his passionate, sensuous painterliness.’’ ‘‘I like to carve with light which is where my intuitive and seemingly spontaneous application of colour comes in.’’ In April, David will exhibit a series of horse-racing paintings and a group of architectural paintings inspired by a recent trip to Edinburgh and the Borders towns and abbeys. David’s seemingly spontaneous application of soft pastel captures all of the movement and speed of the horse race. And, in his architectural works, this same technique suggests that David is ‘‘carving’’ the building in the plane of the painting. |
