Sam Chinnery is a fine furniture designer and craftsman. Most of Sam’s work is to commission but, throughout 2007, some speculative pieces and smaller works will be available for purchase at Broughton Gallery. ‘‘Simple forms, geometric shapes, curves and the play of light all characterise my work, realised by the use of traditional techniques and visible, honest construction.

The variety of colours and textures combined with the strength, warmth and beauty of wood, inspires and influences my design more than anything else.

I want to show the base constituents of my furniture, the materials and craftsmanship. I respect the values and techniques of traditional cabinet making and I want my furniture to combine these hand skills with modern design, showing both to full effect in the material. Exposed joints, cuts of a chisel and soft marks of a plane, all show the passing of a hand and define the shapes being used.

The source of my materials and my impact on the environment also have a major impact on how I design and make my furniture. I aim to use native timber, sourced locally if possible from sustainable sources, finishing with natural oils and waxes.’’
