Ruth King was born in Enfield, Middlesex and trained at Camberwell School of Arts and Craft from 1974-77. She moved to York after four years of living and working in London and moved to her current studio near York in 1987.

Ruth’s sculptural, salt-glazed pots are slab-built using a variety of prepared stoneware bodies. The form is modified after the sections have been assembled so that each pot is unique.

Although Ruth’s pots are aesthetically very accomplished, she is not precious about her work and feels that it is perfectly appropriate to arrange cut flowers in them or to use her small pots as inkwells. Ruth King is on the Crafts Council Index of Selected Makers and is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association.

Her work is held in several public collections including the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
