Judith Gregson is a stone carver who lives and works in Dumfries and Galloway. She carves sculptural forms from local sandstone. From this hard material, Judith creates forms which are inspired by Nature, often incorporating fine detail. The end result seems naturally organic. The Tree is a recurrent image in Judith Gregson’s work. For Judith, the tree, it’s roots, branches, and leaves, the way it grows, the way it moves is a metaphor for the very essence of life. Judith believes that her method of production are a critical part of each finishes piece: ‘‘I do not contemplate the use of mechanical tools because I like the feeling of hand on stone the physical connection of myself to the mallet, to the chisel, to the stone’’.
